BHM 2021: Meet the Author and Artist Showcase Features Claudette Hopkins and Dr. O. Raye Adkins.

February 8, 2021

In honor of Black History Month, St. Philip’s College will host a Meet the Artist and Author Showcase featuring Claudette Hopkins (Artist) and Dr. O. Raye Adkins (Author) on Monday, February 15, 2021, at 11:00 AM. The event will include a virtual gallery of the works of Claudette Hopkins and readings from the literature of Dr. O. Raye Adkins.

Claudette Hopkins has always worked with art. She has created set designs and designed and handcrafted costumes for local dance groups and pageants such as Miss Black San Antonio. Ms. Hopkins has held several one-woman shows and has participated in numerous group exhibits. She has also taught art to young children in various schools and organizations. Her latest venture was to illustrate the children's book When a Deer Rings Your Doorbell written by the event’s featured author, Dr. O. Raye Adkins.

Dr. O. Raye Adkins has dedicated her life to helping children. She has spent more than three decades serving in public education and concluded her career as an award-winning elementary school principal. Dr. Adkins taps into her personal and professional experiences to write books and articles that positively impact the lives of others. She recognizes the need for minority children, particularly African Americans, to see themselves represented in books. Her first children’s book, A Book for the Child in All of Us, is penned as a delightful read for both children and adults. It delves into the challenges that young girls face in experiencing the loss of a father. The book guides readers through the events of the main characters and includes more than 18 original character renditions – the artwork of featured artist Claudette Hopkins.

The Meet the Artist and Author Showcase is free and open to the public. To learn more about this month's BHM observance, click here
