The Alamo College District (ACD) Board of Trustees has selected St. Philip’s College student, Darius F. Martin, as the new Student Trustee for 2020-2021. As a Trustee, Darius will participate as an advisor to the Board and serve as a liaison between students, Board Trustees and the Chancellor. While gaining leadership experience, his role will ensure that ACD students participate in district governance.

Darius is currently pursuing an Associate's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. He is an active member of Collegiate 100, a chartered support organization that serves to nurture and enhance the growth and development of young men and women of color. Through the organization, he mentors and guides the Early College High School students on professional development skills and college readiness. In addition to mentoring, Darius participates in various community service activities such as volunteering with Wealth Between Us. While interviewing for the position Darius said that he believes “leaders should eat last,” furthermore stating that, “to me, this means that I am willing to sacrifice myself for the greater good of the group I am serving.”

The Alamo Colleges District is one of the few community college systems in the state with a student trustee, demonstrating the Alamo Colleges' dedication to building student leaders. The role of a Student Trustee includes travel, advocacy, several meetings, events and networking opportunities. In addition, the student receives a $300 scholarship at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester of his/her year of service, for a total of $600 scholarship in recognition of the time spent as a trustee.
